Neuroscience Electronics Lab

The iBehave eLab provides essential support for over 50 groups throughout NRW via our electronics laboratory in Cologne within the iBehave network. Our main task is to develop and provide expertise in the development of scientific instruments such as sensors, motor control systems, optoelectronics, circuit designs, etc. Additionally, we assist researchers in customizing and implementing the instruments we develop, as well as advising students who require new instruments for their experiments, whether through new methods or entirely novel ideas. Our mission is to promote the development and utilization of innovative instruments in neuroscience research while addressing the needs and challenges of scientists.

At iBehave eLab, we specialize in a range of fields, empowering us to tackle diverse challenges in scientific instrumentation and research. Our key competence areas include:

- Amplifier Design

In the domain of Amplifier Design, our focus lies in developing state-of-the-art amplifier circuits for various applications in electronics and signal processing. Our designs are precisely tailored to the specific requirements of each application, ensuring reliable and efficient signal amplification.

- Microcontroller & Embedded Systems

We engineer robust and efficient microcontroller solutions enabling precise control and monitoring of neurophysiological parameters. Our expertise encompasses selecting appropriate microcontroller architectures, developing tailored firmware algorithms, and integrating sensors for reliable data acquisition in neurological and psychological studies.

- Imaging and Illumination

Our work covers design of high-resolution and high-speed imaging systems and illumination technologies for video recording of behavioral experiments as well as neuronal imaging using state-of-the-art sensor technologies and LED illumination. In this way, we optimize imaging applications in neurological and physiological studies.

- Motor Control Systems:

In the domain of motor control systems for behavioral experiments, our expertise lies in the development, manufacturing, testing, and technical support of various systems. Our emphasis is on creating precise control and manipulation of movements in behavioral experiments.

- Optoelectronics & Optogenetic Stimulation:

Throughout our careers we have specialized in developing and implementing optoelectronic systems for a wide range of applications. We enable precise control and stimulation of light, which is particularly important for experimental studies and measurements in the field of optogenetics.

- Open-Source Development:

We are committed to ensuring that the projects we develop in the network can be made accessible to the public. By providing open source hardware, other research institutes, universities and organizations can benefit from our developments and use them for their own purposes.

- Circuit Design:

We often take on new ideas and challenges in circuit design. If you have an innovative concept, feel free to approach us and present it. We provide comprehensive support in bringing your idea to life, from conceptualization to prototyping. Our experienced team will assist you with electronics design to successfully support your goals.
